Happy New Year! So, you’ve packed away the decorations, had a good clean up, and started to think about your new year’s resolutions…
“New Year, New You!”
It’s certainly that time of year when we start to look at ourselves and think about our hopes and dreams for the year ahead. ‘What positive changes can I make? How can I make this year the best yet?’
Some of us want to be healthier, stop smoking, visit the gym more often, spend more time with family etc. Perhaps hunting for a new job role is on your mind. What if your next role isn’t in an office, shop, or factory? What if it started right in your own home?
As a foster carer you earn an income and benefits which could allow you to reduce your working hours, or even leave your current role altogether. You could enjoy the work life balance you have always wanted, spend more quality time with your loved ones, all whilst improving a child’s life for the better.
Why not make 2024 the year you start fostering? Let’s discuss how to become a foster carer in 2024!
Why you should Foster in 2024
Foster carers support some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the UK. As a foster carer you can make a lasting bond, be an advocate, be a mentor, teach life skills…the list of reasons goes on. Being a foster parent can be challenging, but also highly rewarding. This is a career in which you can truly influence the future of children and young people who desperately need your support and care.
We know that foster families come in all different shapes and sizes, so this is not an exhaustive list. According to The Fostering Network, there were nearly 70,000 children in care, with almost 55,000 living with foster families in 2023.
Sadly, the rate of children coming into care is faster than the rate of new foster carers being approved. Don’t delay, get in touch for a no-obligation chat today.
Who are Family Care Fostering?
We are a family-owned fostering agency based in the Northwest and Midlands, with over 30 years’ experience looking after children and young people. With Family Care, our foster parents benefit from unrivalled support packages, regular peer group support meetings, and an extensive training programme to name just a few benefits.
Throughout our fostering service, we use therapeutic approaches underpinned by The Secure Base model. The Secure Base model was developed through a range of research and practice dissemination projects led by Professor Gillian Schofield and Dr Mary Beek in the Centre for Research on Children and Families.
The model provides a framework for therapeutic caregiving which builds resilience and helps infants, children and young people move towards greater security. All of our foster carers are trained on this model and how to incorporate it into the care they provide to our young people.
Our in-house therapists are on hand to help guide our foster carers through any difficult behaviour they experience, using The Secure Base Model to offer a therapeutic response.
We exist to change children’s lives, why not join the team?
Do I qualify to become a foster carer in 2024?
This is a question we hear a lot. Some people think they can’t foster because they are single, or think they need special qualifications. Some think they don’t have time, or they can’t afford it.
This isn’t necessarily true.
Providing you have a spare bedroom and a passion for working with children, you could become a foster carer. The basic requirements to apply to foster in the UK are:
- You must be over 21 years old
- Have British Citizenship or indefinite leave to remain in the UK
- Have a spare bedroom
If you tick all three boxes and you are in reasonably good health, then we would love to hear from you.
How do I enquire to foster?
The first step on the foster carer journey is to make an enquiry. We hear from many people who have been thinking about fostering for years, and when they eventually do get in touch they wonder why they left it so long!
Alternatively, you can pick up the phone and give us a call, there is no obligation for anything more than a chat. Call us on 0800 5 677677 and we will be happy to help you. Or if you prefer, you can enquire online and we will get in touch: https://family-care.co.uk/enquire-to-foster/
We understand that every enquiry is unique, so rest assured we will do our upmost to support and guide you every step of the way. So just a quick recap. When considering a New Year’s resolution this year, Family Care urges you to think about the massive difference you could make to the life of a young person in 2024 and beyond by becoming a foster carer.
