My Journey as a Support Worker – Meet Charlotte

Hi, my name is Charlotte. I am a Support Worker with Family Care and have been on this journey for 1.5 years.

My role consists of organising activities for young people and supporting them through direct 1-1 sessions with them. Attending welcome visits for new children going into foster families, getting regular feedback from the children about living in their foster families and keeping foster families informed by creating monthly newsletters.

What is your favourite thing about being a Support Worker at Family Care, and why?

Supporting the young people, seeing them in activities smiling and having fun seeing their achievements and their little wins. Working collaboratively within a team learning and sharing ideas to continually improve practice.

How does your work create a sense of community?

My work creates a sense of community by working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes for children, going on activities with the children and sometimes the foster carers. Attending fostering recruitment events in various locations creates an ethos of getting in the community spirit.

What traits do you need to have to be a Support Worker?

Patience as sometimes you will be dealing with challenging behaviours. You need to be supporting and encouraging towards foster carers and foster children. Be a good communicator and listener to build trustworthy relationships within the family.
