As June rolls around, we at Family Care Group are proud to join in the celebrations of Pride Month! This is a time to honour the rich diversity of the LGBTQ+ community, reflect on the progress made towards equality, and recognise that love, in all its forms, truly makes a family.

For us, Pride Month is also a powerful reminder of our unwavering commitment to inclusive fostering. We believe that every child deserves a safe, loving, and stable home, and that the best foster carers come from all walks of life, all backgrounds, and all identities.

Can You Be a Foster Carer?

Unfortunately, outdated assumptions can sometimes deter incredible potential foster carers. Let's bust some common myths:

  • Myth: You have to be a heterosexual couple to foster.
    • Reality: Absolutely not! Family Care Group warmly welcomes applications from single individuals, same-sex couples, and people of all gender identities and sexual orientations. Your capacity to provide a nurturing, stable environment is what truly matters, not your relationship status or orientation.
  • Myth: LGBTQ+ carers only foster specific types of children.
    • Reality: This is also untrue. LGBTQ+ foster carers provide homes for a diverse range of children, just like any other foster carer. Matches are always made based on the child's individual needs and the carer's skills and experience.
  • Myth: LGBTQ+ foster carers face discrimination.
    • Reality: At Family Care Group, we are committed to being an inclusive and supportive agency. We provide equal support, training, and guidance to all our carers, ensuring a welcoming and respectful environment for everyone.

Why Diversity in Fostering Matters

An inclusive fostering community is a stronger fostering community. Here's why the diversity offered by LGBTQ+ foster carers is so invaluable:

  • Rich Life Experiences: LGBTQ+ individuals often bring unique perspectives, resilience, and empathy shaped by their own life journeys. These qualities can be incredibly beneficial in understanding and supporting children from various backgrounds.
  • Positive Role Models: For children and young people, seeing families that reflect the diversity of the world around them is important.
  • Broader Pool of Carers: With an urgent and ongoing need for more foster carers across the North West and West Midlands, welcoming individuals from all communities expands the pool of potential loving homes, ensuring more children receive the care they deserve.

Our Commitment to Support

At Family Care Group, we don't just talk about inclusivity; we practice it. We offer:

  • A Welcoming Environment: From your very first enquiry, you'll find a team that is respectful, understanding, and committed to equality and your well-being as well as the children in our care.
  • Support: We provide comprehensive training and ongoing support that is sensitive to the needs of all our carers, ensuring everyone feels confident and capable.
  • Community and Belonging: You'll become part of a diverse and supportive fostering community where experiences are shared, and everyone is valued.

This Pride Month, we extend a heartfelt invitation to the LGBTQ+ community: if you have love to give, a spare room, and a desire to make a profound difference in a child's life, please consider fostering. Your unique contribution could be exactly what a young person needs to thrive.

Real stories, real impact

Before fostering we worked full time. I worked for a global company and Damian worked as a manager for a truck parts company. In addition, we also ran a children’s club for 9 years at a local church we attended near a local council estate.
