Foster care families from across the North West and the Midlands joined forces during Foster Care Fortnight to highlight the importance of family bonding.

During a trip to the popular BeWilderwood woodland adventure theme park in Cheshire, carers with Family Care Group  and their families took the opportunity to celebrate the positive impact that fostering can have on the lives of vulnerable young people, especially in providing a stable family background for them.

Embracing the theme of Foster Care Fortnight, namely ‘This is Fostering’, carers took the opportunity to share their experiences with other foster families and discuss how they can further improve the support they can give to give to young people as part of a family unit.

During an action packed day at BeWILDerwood park at Whitchurch, carers, their foster children and families were able to a range of activities including zipwires, giant slides, plus treetop structures to climb and explore.

The day also included live storytelling and a chance to meet some of the characters featuring in the stories they heard.
In addition to enjoying the activities on the day, younger people on the trip also had to the chance to contribute to some great artwork which was later put on display.

Layla McFadden, Family Care’s Fostering Support Services Team Leader said: “As an opportunity to celebrate Foster Care Fortnight, this was an ideal way for carers, their families and staff to come together and show how important family is in the fostering journey, both for carers and the children they care for.

“Having a secure family base is so important for a young person, especially when the family structure in their own home has broken down.

Layla adds:” The support that they can get from a foster parent can often make a vital difference in starting to build their own self confidence and having a sense of belonging. The importance of this to a young person in this position cannot be overstated.”

Real stories, real impact

Before fostering we worked full time. I worked for a global company and Damian worked as a manager for a truck parts company. In addition, we also ran a children’s club for 9 years at a local church we attended near a local council estate.
